The Observatory is open to any student with something worth arguing. You do not need experience, a byline elsewhere, or a finished piece — a clear idea is enough to start.

An argument that is yours, not a restatement of the consensus.
Strong arguments
A clear claim, defended — including against the best objection to it.
Evidence
Data, sources and citations a reader can follow up and check.
Clear writing
Readable by someone outside your discipline without losing precision.
Intellectual curiosity
Questions you actually want answered, not topics you think sound impressive.
Willingness to be edited
We edit for clarity and rigour. Good pieces get better this way.
How to pitch
Send us three things:
- A working headline.
- A paragraph on the argument you intend to make.
- How you plan to support it — data, sources, or the literature you are drawing on.
We reply to every pitch. If it is not right for us, we will tell you why rather than leaving you guessing.
